Pagination is a common technical SEO problem with Shopify in that its pagination can create duplicate content issues. By default, Shopify creates a /collections/collection-name/page/x URL for each page of products in a collection. To fix this, we offer the following fixes:

  • add a canonical URL to your theme's collection template to point to the main collection URL
  • add "rel" tags to specify what is the previous page and the next page

Product variants are a common technical SEO problem with Shopify in that product variants can create duplicate content issues. By default, Shopify creates a /products/product-name?variant=x URL for each product variant. To fix this, we offer the following fixes:

  • add a canonical URL to your theme's product template that points to the main product URL

Another common technical SEO problem with Shopify is its URL structure for collections-to-product page. By default, Shopify uses a /collections/collection-name/products/product-name URL structure, which creates duplicate content issues. To fix this, we offer the following fixes:

  • update your theme's Shopify URL structure to point to the product name URL instead when opening a product from a collection.
  • NOTE: This fix technically breaks the theme's default breadcrumbs structure.

In Shopify, you can add tags to products. Tags can help you organize your products and provide a more informed and seamless shopping experience. However, tags create variations of the URLs of your collection pages. For example, youshopifystore.com/collections/silk-shirts/red & yourshopifystore.com/collections/silk-shirts/blue. Both URLs are variations of the primary category page URL - yourshopifystore.com/collections/silk-shirts. In other words, tags can easily cause duplicate content issues.

To solve these issues, we offer these fixes:

  • check your theme's tag pages to identify which are already indexed
  • review each page for duplicate canonical tags to prioritize main collections over others
  • use noindex tags for specific pages to remove them from Google index
