We've all been there - mindlessly, or purposely, shopping online - when finally, we see a product we absolutely must-have. After visiting the website and taking a further look, we're a bit turned off. The site looks like it could be a scam, or giving off fraud vibes, which quickly changes a "yes" into a hard "no!" How did this interest suddenly turn into a click away?
Whether you're an eCommerce beginner or a veteran, doing a double-take on our checklist will help you identify areas that may have your customers doing a quick-click away, and how to fix them.
Here are our tips to building a credible eCommerce experience that customers want to shop from.
People judge the book by the cover and your website by its design.
Nothing turns off a website visitor faster than a photo that looks distorted, pixelated, or out of focus.
“As aesthetically orientated humans, we’re psychologically hardwired to trust beautiful people, and the same goes for websites. Our offline behaviour and inclinations translate to our online existence.” Websites that are more attractive create a greater feeling of trustworthiness and professionalism for consumers.
Here are some quick things to look for across all your website design & photography:
- Visible pixelation
- Extreme saturation (dark or light)
- Out of focus imagery
Site Functionality + Responsiveness
While this sounds basic, you should ensure that your website actually works. Often, apps will update, new content will be uploaded, or other changes will be made to your site that you don't realize impacts it's code or overall structure. If a customer comes to your site and tries to click a link that doesn't work, their next click will most likely be away from your site.
Every time you make a change to your site (no matter how small), ensure you are doing spot checks. Here are some things to test quickly:
Check that your navigation still works by clicking the links.
Open up a product page and add to cart.
Scroll through a collections page to make sure the layout looks as it should.
Open up your site on a different device (mobile vs desktop) and do the checks all over again!
